Not every customer thinks in US dollars. If you sell to people in Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico or Southeast Asia, it helps when they can pay with money that matches their own. Besides the digital US dollar, Access0x1 works with digital versions of several other currencies. This post lists them, explains how the price is worked out, and tells you about the one catch: some of them can only pay while their price source is fresh.
The coins available today
Each of these is a digital coin meant to track one national currency. Each one is available on at least one of the networks where Access0x1 is live. The table shows the currency each follows:
| Coin | Currency it follows |
|---|---|
| USDC | US dollar |
| RLUSD | US dollar (a second dollar coin) |
| EURC | Euro (also available on Arc) |
| tGBP | British pound |
| QCAD | Canadian dollar |
| XSGD | Singapore dollar |
| AUDD | Australian dollar |
| IDRX | Indonesian rupiah |
| MXNe | Mexican peso |
They are issued by different companies, not by us. We do not issue any coin and we do not hold them. A payment in any of them is split in one step, the same way a dollar payment is: your share goes to you and our small fee goes to us. See is my money safe for how that works.
How the price is worked out
You set your price in dollars, for example $40 for a haircut. When a customer chooses to pay in euros, the amount of euros is worked out from the current exchange rate, and the customer sees it before they approve. If you would rather think in euros, that is fine too: the rate does the conversion either way, and the customer pays the matching amount.
The exchange rate comes from a price source that is updated on a regular schedule. Our system checks how recent that update is. If the rate is too old, the payment is refused instead of going through at a price that may be wrong. That protects you and your customer from paying at a stale rate.
The catch: market hours
Here is the plain truth. The coins that follow other currencies, such as the euro or the peso, can only pay while their price source is fresh. Those rates come from currency markets, and currency markets close at the weekend and for some holidays. While a market is closed, the rate stops updating, and when it goes stale, payments in that coin pause until the market opens and the rate updates again.
In practice this means:
- A customer who tries to pay in euros late on a Saturday may be told it is not available right now.
- Nothing is lost. The payment simply does not go through, and the customer can pay in the digital US dollar or try again when the market reopens.
- The digital US dollar is different. USDC is priced as one dollar and has its own, longer freshness window, so it keeps working at the weekend.
If you take payments at the weekend, say at a market stall or for a Saturday booking, make the digital US dollar your main option and treat the other coins as a convenience for weekdays.
When it makes sense
- You sell to a particular country, and your customers there already hold a coin that matches their money.
- You want to save your customers the cost of converting currencies before they pay you.
- You are comfortable receiving the coin they pay with, or you plan to convert it later. Converting is a separate step with its own cost, so ask before you rely on it.
What you should know before you offer it
Money that follows another currency can move against the dollar. If you are paid in euros and you count your books in dollars, the dollar value of what you hold can go up or down between the day you are paid and the day you spend it. Many small businesses are fine with this. Some prefer to price in dollars and ask customers to pay in the digital US dollar. Either is a reasonable choice.
Fees stay the same whichever coin the customer uses. See card fees versus digital-dollar fees for what you pay. These coins work on Base today, and Arc also supports EURC. On Ethereum the list is longer: PayPal USD, Tether, Pax Dollar, Global Dollar, RLUSD, USD1, DAI, USDS, EURC, QCAD, tGBP, XSGD, AUDD and JPYC for the Japanese yen. Where Access0x1 is live shows every network.
